Marowak Spiced Chicken Bones

Marowak, the Bone Keeper Pokémon, evolves from Cubone from level 28. In Alola, Marowak has a regional variant that is Fire/Ghost. It evolves from Cubone when levelled up at night starting at level 28. All Cubone in Alola evolve into this form regardless of their origin. Marowak is a bipedal Pokémon with light brown skin and a cream-coloured underside. Marowak is a bipedal Pokémon with light brown skin and a cream-coloured underside.

Upon evolution, Marowak has overcome the grief of its mother’s passing. Now ferocious and violent, Marowak is an adept combatant that uses the bone it carries as a weapon and a boomerang. Having evolved, it seeks vengeance on its natural enemy Mandibuzz, which prey on Cubone because of its naturally weak and timid demeanor. Marowak has also been recorded pounding on boulders with the bone club it carries in order to tap out messages to others. It lives in mountains to test its skills.

1 tbsp Cayenne Pepper

1 tsp Ground Ginger
1 tsp Onion Powder
0.5 tsp Ground Cardamom
0.5 tsp Ground Nutmeg
0.5 tsp Garlic Powder
0.25 tsp Ground Cloves
0.25 tsp Ground Cinnamon
0.25 tsp Allspice
6 Chicken Drumsticks
60g Flour
1 tbsp Baking Powder
1 tbsp Cornflour
2 tbsp Butter
Chips (to serve)
Salad (to serve)

As the Bone Keeper Pokémon, I wanted to create a dish that utilises chicken drumstick as they’re great to hold and eat from. I also wanted to use a sauce over my chicken and found a ground spice based mixture that would work perfectly with the typings. Given a normal Marowak is Ground type, the ground up spices work in this case, and the fire aspect of the Alolan form gives the chicken a bit of heat.

Berbere, pronounced Bear-Ber-Ray, is an Ethiopian spice mixture that usually includes chili peppers, garlic, ginger, basil, korarima, rue, ajwain or radhuni, nigella, and fenugreek. As some of these ingredients are not commonly available in the UK, I found a mixture that closely resembles the mixture which should have the similar flavourings.

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1
In a medium bowl, combine the paprika, salt, cayenne pepper, fenugreek, ginger, onion powder, cardamom, nutmeg, garlic powder, cloves cinnamon, and allspice. Mix well but set aside 2 tablespoons. Add the spice mixture to the chicken drumsticks and toss to coat evenly. Marinate in the fridge at least 30 minutes, up to overnight.
Step 2
Preheat the oven to 200ºC. In a small bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and cornflour. Sprinkle the flour mixture over the marinated chicken and toss until well coated.
Step 3
Place the chicken on a wire rack set over a greaseproof paper lined baking tray. Bake them for 30-40 minutes or chicken is slightly browned.
Step 4
In a small saucepan, melt the butter. Once melted, add the reserved 2 tablespoons spice mix and stir to combine. Drizzle the spice butter mixture over the drumsticks. Add some chips and salad to the side.
