Inspiration from

Pharah

Pharah is an Egyptian Security Chief from the game Overwatch. She has blast rocket on her back which acts like a rechargeable jetpack that allows her to maintain flight in-game. From her arm she sends rockets towards enemies and energy blasts that knock-back foes and herself from danger. Her ultimate ability keeps her static in the air as she sends a barrage of rockets towards the enemy team.

Following her Egyptian heritage, I wanted to try a traditional dish for Pharah so I had a search online for meals as I haven’t cooked Egyptian food before. I eventually found Sharkaseya and was quite intrigued with the ingredients that I adapted another recipe to form my version. Sharkaseya utilises a bread and walnut sauce that is poured over Chicken or Veal and Rice. It’s an interesting meal and I was unsure the flavours would live up to the standard but it was surprisingly tasty for a cuisine I hadn’t tried.

Ingredients

  • 2 slices Toast (crusts removed)
  • 2 Garlic cloves (minced)
  • 100g Walnuts
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 150ml Water
  • Chicken Stock
  • 1 tbsp Black Pepper
  • 2 Boneless Chicken Breasts
  • 1 Onion (diced)
  • 100ml Single Cream
  • 2 Portions of Rice (cooked)

For the sauce you’ll need to use a food processor to crumb the bread and walnuts together. If you want to try using this without a food processor, you could try using store bought breadcrumbs, garlic granules and ground walnuts and stirring it into the pot.

For this recipe it suggested to use white bread. Personally I buy Farmhouse Brown Bread. Toasting the bread beforehand means you won’t be left with a lumpy sauce and will instead give a grainy texture.

In the Sharkeseya, the chicken is boiled in water. When draining the chicken, keep some of the the water to add to your sauce. Make sure you cook a batch of rice before or during cooking. You’ll need it to be ready to serve your chicken and sauce on top.

There’s nothing stopping you adding some vegetables into the mix, as the dish doesn’t highlight any. Some Mediterranean vegetables would go down a treat with this meal. You could try roasting some chopped bell peppers, courgettes, mushrooms or tomatoes to sit alongside the meal and add a bit of colour to the plate!

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

In a food processor, add the bread, garlic and walnuts. Blend until it reaches a fine texture.

Step 2

Sauté the chicken breasts with onions until golden on all sides. Add stock cube, then pour water and leave it until the chicken is tender.

Step 3

Drain the chicken but keep the chicken broth to use it for the sauce. In a cooking pan, heat 1 tablespoon of oil and add the bread-walnut mixture, and season it with the nutmeg.

Step 4

Sauté until the mixture starts to turn lightly golden. Using a ladle, pour in 2 spoonfuls of the chicken broth and mix to make sure the sauce is very smooth. Season with pepper.

Step 5

Add the cream and stir. Cook over very low heat for a few minutes.

Step 6

Place the cooked rice in a dish. Ladle some of the sauce over the rice and top with chicken, then pour more sauce over the chicken. Top the Chicken Sharkaseya with roughly chopped walnuts for more texture and a lovely nutty flavour. Garnish with a sprinkling of Parsley. Optionally add a side of Mediterranean vegetables.
