Stitch’s Ohana Burger

Stitch was created by “evil genius” Dr. Jumba Jookiba, who called him “Experiment 626.” Both Jumba and 626 were captured and put on trial by the United Galactic federation. 626 is sentenced to life imprisonment but escapes and crash-lands on Earth in Kaua’i, Hawaii.

Disguising himself as a dog to hide from his captors, 626 is adopted by a little girl named Lilo, who names him “Stitch.” Meanwhile, Jumba and his supervisor, Pleakley, travel to Earth to arrest the fugitive. Stitch continues to use Lilo as a mere shield against Jumba and Pleakley, with his efforts proving to be a success, as the bounty hunters have strict orders to both remain hidden and prevent harm against humans in their attempts.

However, Stitch’s disruptive programming begins to take effect, and as such, trouble is caused for Lilo and her older sister, Nani This causes tension between Nani and Stitch, who wishes to rid her family of the newfound pet, but because of Lilo’s persistence, Stitch remains with them.

Ingredients

For the Sauce:
4 tbsp Mayonnaise
2 tbsp Teriyaki Sauce
1 tbsp Honey
0.25 tsp Cayenne Pepper
For the Burgers:
4 Pineapple Rings
1 Red Bell Pepper (seeded and sliced into rings)
4 Beef Burgers
200g Spam (sliced into 4 slabs)
4 tsp Teriyaki Sauce
4 slices Sliced Cheese
4 Brioche Buns (gluten-free if desired)
0.5 whole Red Onion (thinly sliced)
4 Lettuce Leaves (plus extra for sides)

This is the first inspiration that has a second recipe! Remember my Galaxy Noodle Bowl back in June last year? Well this meal is also inspired by Lilo and Stitch. I’ve gone with a Hawaiian style Burger, incorporating grilled pineapple and spam into the dish. This meal comes with a side helping of extra burger sauce and the cheese is melted over the meaty burger during cooking!

I am using a gluten-free brioche bun for these burgers as we’ve had to change our diets at home, but I’ve found brioche burger buns are so much tastier than regular rolls, so give that a try!

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1
To make the sauce, stir together the mayo, teriyaki sauce, honey, and cayenne. Set aside.
Step 2
Griddle the pineapple and bell pepper rings in a skillet over medium-high heat until they have great grill marks. Set aside and add the spam slices to the pan until they have grill marks on each side.
Step 3
Cook the burgers over medium heat for 4 to 5 minutes on the first side, then flip them over and add a teaspoon of teriyaki sauce on top of each one. Place a slice of cheese on each burger and let it melt while the burger cooks through, about 4 minutes longer.
Step 4
Separate and toast the brioche bun halves either in the toaster or under the grill. Once lightly charred, remove and start stacking the burgers with cheese, spam, burger sauce, red pepper slices, red onion, lettuce, and pineapple inside the buns. Serve with extra burger sauce on the side.
